Bipolar Disorder (used to be called manic depression), is a mental disorder which causes the sufferer to experiance large swings of mood. Depending on the 'type' of bipolar that your mother has got (theres type 1 and type 2) these moods can last for months or only days. Look it up in Wiki to get a good understanding of it. Some are affected more than others. Some people experiancing mania can believe that they are divine, unstopable and all powerful. They can become obsessed with things. One sufferer took his entire car apart in his garage, labeled every part, numbered everything, catalogued everything. Unfortunatly, before he got to put it all back together depression kicked in and he threw the lot away! O.K that's an extreme case but it happens. The depression side of things can make the person feel devestated and feel that theres nothing worth living for. Many of the great poets, authors, painters and creative people in gereral were/are bipolar. It is often treated with 'Librium'. This stabilizes the sufferer. Without getting too deep and technical Bipolar Disorder is when the sufferer moves through cycles of extreme happiness and then down into depression. It's all caused by variations in several of the brains neurochemicals and, the condition itself, can't be cured but only have the peaks and troughs minimised to a more steady state by medication.
It affects more women than men and it affects them more strongly as a rule. It's also passed down from mother to daughter. So, if the mother had it there is a 50% chance the daughter will also have it.

When they are on the elation phase they are usually very happy, gregarious and, in many women, very sexually active. They spend a lot of money (they often don't have) and have a lot of big ideas and the world is great. Real party animals.
When they are on the depression phase they feel, well, all the affects of being depressed and are unhappy and can't think straight.

There are several medications out there to help stabilise their mood swings, the best still being Lithium Salts. Most don't like to take the meds and it's hard to keep them on treatment. They hate the depression phase which they're happy enough to relieve with medication but, they don't like not getting those fantastic highs anymore and tend to go off the meds.

The problem is that many won't admit they actually have a problem and it's hard to get them to the doctor - especially when in the up phase.
I know one such female sufferer and her marriage has broken down because her husband can't keep up with her sexually when she gets on a high and she spends all their money and sells herself to get more. On her down phase she is so horrible to be around. Her temper is really bad and on more than one occasion she has lost it and gone around the house smashing the walls with a golf club and attacked her husband. She is a bad example as she doesn't seem to just go into depression but tends to become violently depressed. She takes everything the wrong way and has arguments with anyone she meets and there's simply no way to please her. She becomes vicious both verbally and at times physically but won't go to the doc as she denies she has a problem
